I have been tutoring privately for eight years. I've also taught undergraduate students subjects related to Math and Science during my two-year stint as an assistant lecturer in the University of Malaya, so I am naturally well-versed in these topics.
FOCUS
For long-term results, I prefer to teach students the concept of Mathematics and Science, and not just memorising formulas or tables. Doing this enables the student to have a better grasp of the subject, therefore enabling him or her to understand the cause and effect of any Math or Science related problem.
This method will then make redundant the habit of mugging before exams, because once the foundation is in place, all that is needed to strengthen the student's grasp is repetition and duplication.
Concept is the most important aspect of these subjects; to teach a student Math or Science without touching on the basics and concepts is like building a house without a foundation, or beginning a 100 metre sprint by jogging or even walking at the start.
Before the classes commence, I usually discuss with parents and the student to gain different views and to understand how to approach the classes, because no two students are alike. I will also review the student's prior exam papers to analyse the common mistakes made.
